Which One Are You?

(A poem by Sal Godoij.)

Say that you are looking at an old photography

And you are in it

A younger you, a much younger you

Among other people in that frame.

Looking at that old photography then

Is like opening a door

A door you once opened, but time closed.

The photography brings you back

Memories of a moment, landscape, a season

Strangers once familiar surge at great speed

Through the mist in your pupils.

Everything happens while the past

Swiftly, in silence, withdraws

Like at the end of a function, in a theatre of ghosts

The curtain draws.

So, please take the photography

And face a mirror

Look at your image in the photography

And look at your image in the mirror

Which one are you?

Both?

It can’t be.

Like a gust of wind, life blows every moment

Every moment is like a candle

Life blows the candle, but the candlelight does not go out

Instead, it burns in your heart

Where it remains lit to the end of your days.
