Good Friday
Hello, my friend, I hope you are well.
A while ago, I wrote a book of eleven short stories. These stories explore themes in fiction, historical fiction, romance, and sci-fi.
At the time, I was thinking about the amazing array of themes and subjects a writer has, and so I chose to write a different story, which came back to me today on this Good Friday.
And so, among the historical short stories, I highlight today “Clandestine Gospel,” a chronicle as sorrowful as it is vivid of the last minutes of Jesus on the cross.
Because many excellent friends and readers adhere to different faiths, religions, and beliefs I feel it is my duty to clarify that most Christians commemorate this day as the day of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice on the cross.
My recollection of the story about Jesus on the cross helps me to encourage you, as a writer, to explore any theme or subject you like, no matter how challenging it seems. Research, as is suggested in most writing lessons, is fundamental, especially if you are writing about something that is clearly challenging, controversial, highly emotional, and sensitive to many readers. Political, religious, and historical stories fell into these categories.
On the story about Jesus’ last moments on the cross, I must say that, beyond a story to show a sorrowful chapter not described in the gospels, the reader will be surprised to find such an extraordinary number of quality details on the epoch, for the story unfolds against an extraordinary description of Jerusalem in that era, soldiers, Herodes, Judas, and Caiaphas, ordinary citizens, even Jesus’s family portrayed celebrating Pass Over, the whole historical moment in which the drama develops, all framed in heartbreaking details, plus Jesus’s lasts thoughts on the people He loved and on the path he followed until that moment, while agonizing on the cross, related all with minute detail, respect, and compassion.
Again, I wrote this post to encourage you as a writer to write about any subject or theme that comes to your mind. I am not advertising my book here; I am speaking only of a specific story that directly relates to the date Christians around the world are commemorating today.
Thank you for reading.
Peace and love.
Sal
